Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica will screen at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide, followed by the DVD release this fall. More about the film…
Helvetica screening tour underway – After a sold-out World Premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, the global screening tour for Helvetica has begun. Check out the preliminary schedule, which will include over 100 special event screenings worldwide this year, more added every week.

Helvetica: Sex without love. The lack of volition is pure denial. You can do whatever you want with Helvetica. There is neither resistance nor agreement – just still water with a smooth surface, perfectly mirroring the lover of the moment.
Clemens Schedler

I discovered that I never really used Helvetica but I like to look at it.
I like the VW beetle, too, although I’ve never driven one.

I have never designed a logotype without first trying it in Helvetica. It is still the most versatile, classic and readable of all typefaces.
Steff Geissbuhler
Wouldn’t it be interesting if there were only one typeface in the world? Designers would really have to think about the ideas behind their designs instead of covering them up with fancy typefaces. One universal typeface would really strip away all the flashy emptiness in design. And, of course, that one typeface would have to be Helvetica.
Erik Kessels, KesselsKramer
… Still fresh, still popular: Helvetica is king!

Helvetica is like a good screwdriver; a reliable, efficient, easy-to-use tool. But put it in the wrong hands and it’s potentially lethal.

Helvetica is to typeface as Toblerone is to chocolate.

I remember a time at Yale when my work was being critiqued by Paul Rand. Mr. Rand told me only to use Helvetica as a display face never in text, then he squinted, leaned in, and whispered in my ear, “because Helvetica looks like dogshit in text”
Kyle Cooper
for me, this typeface does not even exist.

Helvetica – the epitome of ugliness.
